“What do we do? We can’t just stand here, Jarrett.” Thayne looked over at Jarrett and he reached out, placing a steadying hand on his forearm.

“We have to leave it to the experts, Thayne. They know what they’re doing.”

Thayne’s body was practically thrumming with the need to run over to the car and do something… anything to save his best friend.

Thayne furrowed his brow, staring into Jarrett’s eyes. “I feel so helpless.” He turned to watch the bomb techs who’d brought a containment unit with them. He knew enough to know that once they did remove the device from under Sarah’s seat, they would transfer the bomb to the containment unit so that everyone around them would be safe.

The two techs, dressed in heavy padding, were walking toward Sarah’s car with a thick metal plate. Thayne understood the mechanics of what they were about to do. He’d seen it done during his training but still, it was incredibly difficult to cope with the fact that Sarah’s life was at stake and because Lincoln wouldn’t leave her side, his was as well. He trembled and Jarrett took his hand.

“Come on, darlin’. We need to step back so that we’re not in the way if…”

Thayne turned to stare at him, feeling his heart squeeze. “If the bomb goes off. I know, Jarrett.” He clutched Jarrett’s hand hard and stood with Mac and Dev, watching, waiting helplessly, holding his breath. He was certain all the others were as worried as he was but too concerned to voice their fears out loud, as if it would cause the bomb to explode just by saying something.

One of the bomb techs crouched in front of the car door where Sarah sat on the pressure plate. Another of them stood over him, talking quietly, probably giving him either encouragement or instructions of some kind. Rage flooded Thayne’s blood. Who’d done this? It must be Mawby but if so, it meant that he had been following them. He wondered whether there was another bomb in the Nova or one in Snow’s huge truck. Thank God none of them had gotten into their vehicles and then panicked.

The bomb tech slid the plate beneath Sarah’s seat. He had his back to Thayne so he wasn’t at the right angle to see exactly what was going on but once the plate was in place, the bomb tech pulled out a screwdriver and began fiddling with something under the seat. The tech sat up and turned his head, reaching out to take a pair of something that appeared to be clippers from the other man. Thayne held his breath as the bomb tech bent and slowly inserted the tool, working something under the seat. He was talking to Sarah, probably telling her what was going on, step by step. She was watching his face and nodding. Every so often, she turned her head and glanced at Snow who was on the side opposite them. Thayne couldn’t see his face but he had no doubt, Lincoln was giving her encouragement as well.
